cate blanchett

In just over a year after graduating from Australia's
National Institute of Dramatic Art in 1992, Cate had already
earned herself critical and audience-wide applause. She
joined the Sydney Theatre Company immediately after graduation,
and appeared as Felice Bauer in "Kafka Dances,"
and won the Sydney Theatre Critics Circle award for Best
Newcomer. Soon after, she appeared in a production of
David Mamet's "Oleanna," and won the Rosemont
Best Actress Award, her second award that year.
In 1994 Cate moved on to television, appearing
in ABC's "Heartland," for which she received
even more critical acclaim. She hadn't completely abandoned
the theatre, however, and appeared in several stage productions,
racking up kudos - and awards - for all of them.
In 1997 she made her feature film debut
in "Paradise Road" with Glenn Close and Frances
McDormand, and then went on to appear in the title role
in "Elizabeth." She won a number of awards
for the role, including a Golden Globe for Best Actress,
and was nominated for an Oscar in the same category.
Most recently, after appearing in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy as the Elf Queen Galadriel, she appeared in
"The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou," the
newest offering from Wes Anderson.
