A dramatic though funny story, originally a stage production, "Closer" brings us Jude Law as Dan, an aspiriring novelist who earns extra cash writing obituaries. When he meets Alice (played by Golden Globe nominee Natalie Portman), she quickly becomes his muse, and Dan finds himself growing more and more confident. So much so that he finds the courage to finally approach the woman he had been loving from afar (played by Julia Roberts). Though she ends up marrying Larry (Clive Owen, another nominee), she continues a secret affair with Dan. Directed by Mike Nichols.
