david carradine

David Carradine, son of the near-legendary character actor
John Carradine and father of Keith, Robert, Michael and
Kansas, has become no less than an icon for most people.
But he hadn't even planned to become an actor. Born in
Hollywood, he was at college studying music theory and
composition when he was bitten by the acting bug. He joined
a Shakespearean repertory company and learned most of
his craft on the spot as he went. After spending two years
in the army, he returned to the stage and found fame on
Broadway, before returning to Hollywood. He ended up starring
in Martin Scorsese's first
Hollywood film "Boxcar Bertha" in 1972, but
it was his starring role in "Kung Fu" that would
make Carradine a star until he left to pursue more films.
The first season alone found it nominated for 7 Emmy Awards,
including one for Carradine as Best Actor.
In 1976 he received the Best Actor Award
from the National Board of Film Review, and a Golden Globe
nomination for his role as Woody Guthrie in "Bound
for Glory." This would be far from his last encounter
with award ceremonies, though, racking up nominations
at the Golden Globes, Sundance and others.
In 2003 he appeared - sort of - in Quentin
Tarantino's long-awaited "Kill Bill, Vol. 1"
alongside Uma Thurman,
creating yet another iconic character in the process.
