Fernando Meirelles grew up in a middle class family in São Paulo City, Brazil. His initial idea of a career was not in film, instead he studied architecture, but switched to film.

Meirelles had a lot of success early in his career, winning many prizes for short films he entered in Brazilian film festivals and eventually formed a production company called Olhar Eletrônico.

During his career Meirelles has had a lot of success in the international film market. This year Meirelles made is first venture in the world of Hollywood filmmaking with his feature film The Constant Gardener.

The film is up for a best picture Golden Globe and Meirelles is nominated for best director.
