Frances McDormand was born in Chicago and was raised
in Pennsylvania by her Canadian parents.
McDormand attended Bethany College and got a B.A. in Theater
in 1979. She went on to continue her dramatic studies at Yale. She had a
successful stage career with appearances in plays like A Streetcar Named
Desire, for which she won a Tony award for.
She made her big film breakthrough with appearance in Fargo
with director husband Joel Coen. Since then she has appeared in Almost Famous,
Something's Gotta Give and more recently in North Country.
McDormand is nominated for Best Supporting
Actress for her work in North Country, which
also stars nominee Charlize
Theron.
