Helen Mirren was originally named Ilynea Lydia Mironoff, she was born into a family that had a historic background in their native Russia.

Mirren’s grandfather was a Tsarist aristocrat who was in London to talk to the British government about the ending of the Russo-Japanes war. The Russian Revolution started while he was on his trip and left him and his family stranded in London.

Helen Mirren spent most of her acting career on the stage, but has been very successful on the silver screen as well. Mirren has been in movies like Excalibur, Gosford Park, Calendar Girls and Raising Helen.

This year is nominated for her performance in Calendar Girls.
