javier bardem

The youngest son in a family of actors, Javier Bardem
has been making films since he was six years old when
he appeared in "El Pícaro" (the Scoundrel).
He appeared in several television shows throughout his
teens, as well as playing for the Spanish National Rugby
Team and touring with an independent theatre
group. In 1992 Bardem appeared in the black comedy "Jamón,
Jamón" (Ham Ham) as a swarthy young stud,
and became an instant star. Fame had a downside, however,
as he began to find himself typecast as the everyday
latin sex symbol; in order to combat this he flatly
refused to accept those roles any more. He went on to
appear in more than 25 films, garnering him numerous
awards, but it was his portrayal of tortured Cuban author
Reinaldo Arenas in 2000's "Before Night Falls"
for which he received a Best Actor Oscar nomination.
