Jim Carrey hardly needs any introduction: since he burst
onto the movie scene in a big way after appearing in the
smash hit "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" alongside
Courteney Cox, his over-the-top brand of humor and incredibly
rubber face has made him not just one of the world's most
recognizable actors, but most recognizable people. Growing
up poor in Newmarket, Ontario in the 70s, Jim says he
developed his sense of humor in reaction to the anger
he felt toward the world, going to school and working
as a janitor to help support his family at the same time.
Jim eventually dropped out of high school to devote more
time to helping his family. At 15, he began performing
at Yuk Yuk's, a famous Toronto comedy club, and moved
to L.A. soon after. It was there that he was discovered
by Rodney Dangerfield and was asked to join his comedy
tour, but Jim still lived in essential obscurity, doing
bit parts in movies here and there and doing impressions
at the Comedy Store.
In 1990 Jim got his big break when he joined
the cast of In Living Color (which also starred Jamie
Foxx), the only white performer on the show, where
he perfected such crazy characters as Fire Marshall
Bill (eventually pulled from the show after allegedly
"encouraging children to play with fire").
In 1994 Jim got his first starring role in Ace Ventura,
and followed that up the same year with "The Mask."
After that, it was all a cake walk; despite such low
points as the Ace Ventura sequel and the critically
abysmal "The Cable Guy," Jim became an audience
favorite. He began making forays into less comedic roles
at about this time, most notably as comedian Andy Kauffman
in "Man on the Moon" and "The Truman
Show," two films for which audiences believed his
lack of an Oscar nomination was a horrible oversight.
This year's "Eternal
Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," directed by
the incredibly talented Michel Gondry, Jim makes a return
to more serious themes alongside Kate
Winslet.
