johnny depp

Born in Kentucky and raised in Florida, Johnny dropped
out of high school at 15 (just like Jim
Carrey did) in the hopes of becoming a rock star.
He fronted a number of less-than-stellar bands, and even
opened for Iggy Pop at one point, but after being introduced
to Nicolas Cage by his former wife, Depp decided to pursue
an acting career. He made his feature film debut in "A
Nightmare on Elm Street" in 1984, but found real
popularity on the small screen in the role of Tommy Hanson
on "21 Jump Street." It was his collaboration
with Tim Burton - the first of several, including "Ed
Wood" and "Sleepy Hollow" - on the beautifully
odd "Edward Scissorhands" that made him known
as a dark, serious, and maybe even slightly dangerous
actor.
Depp has certainly made a name for himself
as a varied actor, if nothing else. In 1997 he appeared
as an undercover FBI agent alongside Al Pacino in "Donnie
Brasco;" in 1998, he portrayed the manic and more-than-slightly
disturbed Hunter S. Thompson in "Fear and Loathing
in Las Vegas;" and in 2003 played the terrific role
of Captain Jack Sparrow in "The Pirates of the Carribbean,"
bringing him legions of new fans. This year he stars in
several more, including another collaboration with Tim
Burton in a remake of Roald Dahl's classic "Charlie
and the Chocolate Factory."
"Finding
Neverland," directed by Marc
Forster, co-stars Kate
Winslet, who just happens to be nominated for a
Golden Globe for "Eternal
Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" with Jim
Carrey.
He is nominated this year for his role
as Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
