Kate never had a chance: she was born into a family of
actors. Her parents were both stage actors, her grandparents
on her mother's side ran a theatre, and her uncle was
a well-known actor in London's West End theatre district.
So it was inevitable that Kate would end up with some
of the family talent. When she was 11 she got her first
job dancing in a children's cereal commercial, and began
taking acting lessons at about the same time. She landed
a few roles on stage & in short-lived sitcoms, but
her big break came when she was 17 and cast in "Heavenly
Creatures," a film based on the real life story of
two high scool girls who commit a grisly murder. Though
the film received acclaim from critics, it was marketed
modestly, and hence Kate didn't receive the star status
she may have deserved.
It was her role as Marianne Dashwood in
Ang Lee's "Sense and Sensibility" (co-starring
another Golden Globe hopeful, Imelda
Staunton) that brought her her first round of praise,
for which she won a British Academy Award and was nominated
for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress; her next came
from her role in James Cameron's epic film "Titanic,"
alongside Leonardo
DiCaprio in 1997, for which she received another
Oscar nomination for Best Actress, making her a household
name, as well as the youngest actress to ever receive
two Academy nominations. Her third will hopefully come
from this year's brilliant film "The
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," directed
by the incredible Michel Gondry and co-starring Jim
Carrey. She also appears in the nominated film "Finding
Neverland," directed by Marc
Forster and co-starring Johnny
Depp.
