Kevin Kline, equally brilliant in both dramatic and comedic
roles, is one of the most highly-respected performers
of his generation. He began performing early on, while
growing up in the suburbs of St Louis, continued acting
throughout college, and attended Juilliard after graduation.
In 1972 he joined the New York Acting Company, led by
John Houseman, and travelled the country performing Shakespeare
and garnering praise for his portrayals of Romeo and Hamlet.
Just a few years later he was onstage in New York again,
and won a Tony and a Drama Desk award for his work in
the Broadway prouction of "On the Twentieth Century."
A few years after that, he won the same awards for a second
time.
After a short time on a soap opera, Kline
appeared in "Sophie's Choice" with Meryl
Streep and was rewarded with a Golden Globe nomination
- not bad for his feature film debut! The year after he
appeared in "The Big Chill" with an all-star
cast including John Hurt, Glenn Close and Tom Beringer.
In 1987, Kline appeared in Richard Attenborough's powerful
drama "Cry Freedom," and the next year he won
a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his appearance in "A
Fish Called Wanda." He earned another Golden Globe
nomination for "Soapdish," an otherwise forgettable
film. Yet another nomination followed with "Dave"
(also featuring Laura Linney),
and then another for "In & Out" with Tom
Selleck (for which they were both nominated for Best Kiss
at the MTV Movie Awards).
Also appearing in "De-Lovely"
is fellow nominee Ashley
Judd.
