Not many people ever would have expected Marc Forster
to become a director, least of all him - he had never
even seen a movie until he was 12 years old.
But it was Francis Ford Coppola's near-legendary 1979
film "Apocalypse Now" that seems to have changed
his life. In 1990 he left his native Switzerland to attend
New York University's illustrious film school. "Loungers,"
his first film after graduation (five years after, actually),
won him the Audience Award for Best Feature at the 1996
Slamdance Festival, as well as a reputation as a very
promising up-and-comer.
Five years afterward he followed up with
"Everything Put Together," a gripping pschological
drama that won him a nomination for the Grand Jury Prize
at Robert Redford's celebrated Sundance Film Festival,
as well as winning the "Someone to Watch" prize
at the 2001 Independent Spirit Awards.
The success of the film brought him an offer
to direct "Monster's Ball," which he rightly
accepted and earned critical acclaim for. The film also
won a Best Actress Oscar for its star, Halle Berry -
not to mention a huge amount of offers for its director.
He would eventually settle on "Finding
Neverland," with stars Johnny
Depp and Kate
Winslet, and with Golden Globe nominations all around.
