nicole kidman

Born in Hawaii but raised in Sydney, Australia, Nicole
Kidman is the embodiment of the elegance of old Hollywood.
She started out as a ballet dancer, and eventually took
up mime and acting as well, but as she grew older her
love of acting began to replace everything else. She eventually
dropped out of high school at 16 to pursue acting full
time, landing a role in the beloved Australian classic
"Bush Christmas," the success of which brought
her stacks of offers for TV and film roles. In 1987 she
appeared in the mini-series "Vietnam" and won
an Australian Film Institute award for the role.
At this point she had secured an American
agent, and soon made her US film debut opposite Sam Neill
in the eerie "Dead Calm." After this she appeared
in "Days of Thunder" where she would meet her
future husband, Tom Cruise. But, determined not to let
her high profile marriage overshadow her blossoming career,
she continued her hard work, appearing alongside Dustin
Hoffman in "Billy Bathgate," Michael Keaton
in "My Life," her husband in "Far and Away,"
and Val Kilmer in "Batman Returns." But it was
her role in Gus Van Sant's "To Die For" that
proved to audiences that she truly had what it took to
make a solid leading lady.
Amid speculation and mild scandal about
her marriage to Tom Cruise and the possibility of his
being gay, the two came out with another movie together,
the long-anticipated "Eyes Wide Shut." The
two did eventually part ways, however, but her star
continued to shine even more brightly than before, appearing
in blockbusters like "Moulin Rouge," "The
Others," "The Hours," "Stepford
Wives" and "Cold Mountain" (co-starring
fellow nominees Renee
Zellweger and Natalie
Portman) to name but a few.
