scarlett johansson

One of the few teenaged actors not starring in
comedies about high school parties and getting laid (cast
of "American Pie," we're looking at you), Scarlett
might just be a saving grace in the making. After graduating
from the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute for Young People,
she made her stage acting debut in the Off-Broadway production
of "Sophistry" alongside Ethan Hawke, and soon
after made her film debut in "North." She followed
these up with with some smaller-named films, but eventually
appeared to great reviews in "Manny & Lo"
in 1996, a role which earned her a nomination for an Independent
Spirit Award for Best Actress.
In 2000, she appeared in the movie rendition
of the cult comic book "Ghost World" alongside
Thora Birch. Though she would make a quick foray into
the less critic-thrilling "8-Legged Freaks"
with David Arquette, the following year she appeared
in the highly-acclaimed "Lost
in Translation" with Bill
Murray, directed by
Sofia Coppola, and Hollywood - and everyone else
- would begin to take real notice of this soon-to-be
very brightly shining star.
This year she is nominated for the Best
Supporting Actress Golden Globe for her work in Woody
Allen's Match Point.
