Shirley MacLaine became a great dancer at an early age,
she was also a really good baseball player. MacLaine put away her baseball
cleats and joined the cheerleader squad. Her brother Warren
Beatty was also interested in acting.
After finishing school MacLaine decided that she wanted to be
an actress and moved New York to try her luck. She was able to land roles in
the stage, first as an understudy and eventually started to land leading roles.
MacLaine decided to follow up her success with film and began to get parts in movies.
MacLaine quickly became known as one of Hollywood's best actresses at
the time and even got her first of many Academy Award nominations for her role as Ginny
Moorhead in 1958's Some Came Running.
This year MacLaine is nominated for Best Supporting actress for her work
on In Her Shoes.
