Tom Cruise was actually born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV. It seems that the name change has probably helped his career. Very few would argue with the fact that Tom Cruise is one of the top movie stars in the world right now.

During his childhood Cruise was moved to different schools across the United States and Canada. He was very religious teen and attended school to be a priest for a year, before deciding that it was not for him, at the age of 18 Tom Cruise moved to New York to become an actor.

His first movie role was in a film called Endless Love, which was somewhat successful and set Tom up for some of his most famous roles in the 80’s including Top Gun, The Color of Money, Rain Man and Born on the Fourth of July. The 90’s were a busy time for the actor as well with movies like Interview with the Vampire, Mission: Impossible going to top of the box office.

Cruise also found critical success with roles in Jerry Maguire and Magnolia. This year Cruise is nominated for his work on The Last Samurai with Ken Watanabe.

Currently Tom Cruise is engaged to his pregnant girlfriend Katie Holmes. Cruise’s last wife is fellow Golden Globe Nominee Nicole Kidman.
