uma thurman

Uma Thurman has one of the most interesting biographies
of any star today. Daughter of Swedish parents Robert
F.A. Thurman (a celebrated professor of Buddhist studies
and the first Westerner to be ordained a Tibetan monk)
and Nena von Schlebrugge (a psychotherapist and former
model who was once married to LSD guru Timothy Leary),
Uma's Grandfather was a Baron in Sweden, and a statue
of her grandmother stands in the port town of Trelleborg.
Her parents were introduced to one another by Salvador
Dali, and her uncle, John Thurman, is a professional concert
cellist who performs with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
Uma made her debut in 1987 in a not-so-interesting
film called "Kiss Daddy Goodnight," but not
being the type to get discouraged she pressed on and landed
a starring role the next year in "Johnny Be Good,"
along with another in Terry Gilliam's "Baron Munchausen."
But it was her appearance in the period drama "Dangerous
Liaisons" as Cécile de Volanges that finally
garnered her the recognition she deserved. This was added
to with her role in the NC-17 film "Henry & June,"
filled with steamy scenes that brought her a lot of unwanted
attention from stalker-ish "fans." This resulted
in her shying away from many roles, and the ones she did
take were largely forgettable.
It was Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction"
that revived her career (much like it did for John Travolta),
a part that not only brought her renewed Hollywood interest,
but also a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination.
Unfortunately, it wouldn't last, as she appeared in
several more box office bombs, but made yet another
comeback with Woody Allen's "Sweet and Lowdown."
But again, it was Quentin Tarantino who brough her back
to super stardom when he cast her as the Bride in his
eagerly anticipated "Kill Bill" series, which
also starred David
Carradine as Bill.
